Wednesday 6/29/11 The first negotiation session. The owners Jim Partridge of Smith Emery and Scott Wilson of Signet Testing opened with statements of concern that any agreement must be industry wide. and enforceable. The union submitted a written proposal with work rule changes and increases in wages and fringe benefits. The owners agreed only to some minor items and stated that they will issue a counter proposal at the next meeting. We will not meet again until July 25th and at that time we will see the owners counter proposal.

I'll keep it clean... NO GPS, NO CHANGE IN OUR HEALTHCARE OR BENEFITS, 70% IS BULLSHIT. OUR CONTRACTS WITH RESPECT TO CELE SHOULD ALIGN AT LEAST FOR NOW THE EXPIRATION OF CONTRACTS, THUS BRINGING THE TWO PARTIES TOGETHER ...STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. WE ARE DUE OUR FIVE DOLLAR AN HOUR INCREASE PER OUR CONTRACT..NO IF'S ANDS OR BUTS...PERIOD.
I'M READY TO WALK OVER THIS AND I KNOW OF AT LEAST TWO OTHERS THAT ARE BEHIND ME. IF MICHEAL STRUNK CAN PULL A MAJORITY TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A POWERFUL STAND! SMITH-EMERY AND AIG ARE GEARING UP FOR HARDBALL. WE HAVE BEEN BEAT DOWN FOR TWO YEARS... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Guys.We have the upper hand for the first time in many contracts.Some of the companies want to take away what little we have left.But some companies like ISI,CEL.Signet<SE and others cannot afford for us to walk over any of these issues.We need to stand together as a whole for the betterment of all.

Does anyone know how many contracts ther are out there

Do very many people know that Mr. Strunk has been signing many contracts with different companies that don't match the CELE agreement.For instance_ENGIO has an open shop contract.Ninyo&Moore has a contract but whats in it.Krazan & ASSoc. has a union office.And I'm sure the list goes on.My point is do those members get to vote on our contract or only CELE and NCTIA?I'm sure many of you guys have heard rumors about this stuff.And note whats going on CTS.They seem to have many different contracts in force.We need to be careful about who gets to vote on our future.

I am afraid your are not exactly correct in your characterization. "that Mr. Strunk has been signing many contracts with different companies that don't match the CELE agreement" but I understand your confusion and I am sure others are curious what it is happening here at Local 3's Technical Engineering Division which is why we have restarted The Courier and made it a permanent part of OE3's website www.oe3.org. ; Since I am here I would be happy to address your questions directly.
I have signed 19 testing and inspection firms to Agreements since 2007, some are very small, some not so small to the NCTIA Agreement since it became available to us in 2008. The newest and smallest is East Bay Safety Inspection Inc. owned by a 25 year OE 3 member formerly with Signet Testing Labs. The largest, and one of the first NCTIA Independent firms, RMA Group. RMA now has nearly 50 members working in Northern California and recently acquired the former Terrasearch. No firms inspection / testing firms have been signed to anything other than the NCTIA Agreement since it became available, which was my commitment to the industry when I took on the role as a union organizer.
The net effect of these efforts is opportunity, opportunity for you and all of our now nearly 830 inspectors, technicians and technical support people. While the economic collapse of 2008 hurt all of construction in general, it hurt testing and inspection far less which had a total net loss of hours of 27% from our peak in 2006. This is remarkable when compared to our Surveyor's hours which fell 63% over the same period.
To your specific questions, KTI (Krazan Testing & Inspection) in a union inspection firm signed to the NCTIA Agreement in Sacramento is owned by Dean Alexander and Tom Krazan who also own Krazan and Associates, based in the Fresno area.
ENGEO is a geotechnical and longtime union firm who for a variety of reasons has a stand alone union agreement with a pay scale comparable to the NCTIA Agreement except that the soils tester classification pays a higher rate as this is their specialty. This Agreement came about when ENGEO employees voted to become non-union rather than work under the CELE Agreement because they believed we were not getting the pay or respect the position demanded under the CELE Agreement, the Agreement we all worked under prior to 2008.
Ninyo and Moore is a geotechnical and environmental sciences (engineering firm) with offices in California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas which is signed to three (3) "project agreements" which require the inspectors on the project. Project Agreements are employed when an engineering firm of record (it doesn't matter which one) or a project owner or jurisdiction wants the designers of a project to implement the design and the project is a "union job" which falls under a Project Labor Agreement the engineering firm has a right to participate under the same terms and conditions as a union firm. In the case of a project agreement the firm, in this case Ninyo and Moore must call the hall and request an inspector from the out of work list.
This is one example of why it is vital to get on and maintain your place on the out of work list at least once every 85 days. I hope this answers your question and addresses your concerns.
